Adoption of AI Within the Food & Drink Industry Increasing

 
 

In the swiftly evolving realm of technological adoption, the UK food and drink industry has emerged as a pioneer in incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into various job roles, as indicated by a recent study conducted by PR agency Tank. Positioned as the fourth fastest industry to embrace AI, this development marks a significant stride towards enhancing efficiency and innovation in the sector.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, addressing world leaders gathered in the UK, emphasized the need for AI to function as a 'co-pilot,' supporting and augmenting human capabilities rather than replacing them outright. This stance reflects a commitment to harnessing technology for the benefit of the workforce and the industry as a whole.

Tank's research unveiled intriguing insights into the prevalence of AI skills in job vacancies across different sectors. Approximately 1.5% of food and drink job openings demanded experience working with AI technology, placing it slightly below the electronics (2.79%) and warehousing & distribution (1.59%) sectors. Surprisingly, the fashion industry claimed the top spot, with 4.44% of current vacancies seeking candidates proficient in AI.

Martin Harris, the head of digital at Tank, celebrated the positive transformation AI brings to employment dynamics. He highlighted how AI eliminates labour-intensive tasks, offering individuals more fulfilling opportunities to contribute to business success. Drawing parallels to fundamental skills like numeracy and literacy, Harris predicted that data and AI literacy would likely become prerequisites for both technical and non-technical roles.

"Emotional intelligence is, and always will be, a human trait. It cannot be replicated authentically in a machine, but it can improve the strengths of that trait by backing it up with evidence. This year, in particular, it feels like AI has come of age, and because the technology is so powerful, human judgment and oversight are more important than ever," Harris stated.

The integration of AI in the food and drink industry has manifested in various applications aimed at streamlining processes and enhancing product quality. From employing digital vision systems to identify foreign objects in packaging to predicting upcoming flavour trends, AI has proven its ability to impact manufacturers positively. As the technology continues to evolve, businesses must remain vigilant to leverage these advancements effectively.
